Choosing coffee
Which capsule fits your machine?
Nespresso-compatible or FAP: the two capsule systems we sell, which machines they fit, and what to check before you order.

A capsule only works in the machine it was made for. We sell two systems, and they are not interchangeable.
Nespresso-compatible capsules
Caffè Vergnano’s Oro, Cremoso, Intenso and Napoli capsules are sold as Nespresso-compatible, ten to a box. They are sold as compatible with domestic Nespresso Original machines — not Vertuo, and not professional systems. Their shells are compostable where local facilities accept them — check with your council before they go in the food-waste bin. The four differ in intensity and character; each product page carries the roastery’s own profile and a strength scale, so compare them there. Allow one capsule per cup; the dose is fixed by the capsule, so the choice is between the four coffees, not a quantity. A lungo passes more water through the capsule; for an americano, add hot water to a brewed espresso.
If you are not sure your machine takes Nespresso-compatible capsules, send us its make and model before you order, and we will tell you.
FAP capsules
FAP is a capsule format used by FAP-system machines. The Classico and the Decaffeinato come in boxes of 100. They do not fit Nespresso-type machines, and Nespresso-compatible capsules do not fit FAP machines. The Decaffeinato runs on the same settings as the Classico, as its product page says, and it is the only decaf we stock in capsules; there is no Nespresso-compatible decaf in the range. For an office or a venue with a FAP-system machine, allow one capsule per cup when you estimate a month’s supply; the Coffee Finder for Business helps choose by machine and volume.
Which should you buy?
Look at the capsule your machine came with, or at the name of the system on the machine itself. If it is a domestic Nespresso Original machine, choose from the four Nespresso-compatible coffees; a Vertuo machine takes a different capsule, which we do not stock. If it is a FAP machine, choose Classico or Decaffeinato. If the box does not say, ask us. If you want decaf in a Nespresso Original machine, we cannot help with a capsule: Choosing decaf sets out the three decaf formats we do stock. If the machine is not a capsule machine at all, How to choose coffee for your brew method covers the other five.
Keeping capsules
Capsules are sealed, so they keep well; store the box dry and out of the sun, and there is no need for the fridge. The storage advice for beans and ground coffee is in How to keep coffee fresh at home.
If you prefer beans
A capsule machine is the quick way to a consistent cup. If you would rather grind beans, the Coffee Finder will show you what suits an espresso machine or a bean-to-cup machine. The whole capsule range is in one place, and the FAQ answers the short version of this question.
