Choosing decaf: beans, ground or capsules
Caffè Vergnano’s Decaffeinato comes three ways. Which to buy for an espresso machine, a bean-to-cup machine or a FAP capsule machine, and what the product pages say about each.
Decaf is an option for the afternoon cup, the coffee after dinner, or a guest who prefers it. We stock one decaffeinated coffee, Caffè Vergnano’s Decaffeinato, in three formats, and the right one depends on how you make coffee.
The three formats
The 1 kg beans are for an espresso machine with a grinder or a bean-to-cup machine. Vergnano blend Central and South American Arabica with Robusta; the beans are decaffeinated, then slowly roasted. The roastery’s own profile puts intensity at 8 out of 10, body at 6 and aroma at 10.
The 250 g ground tin is ground for an espresso machine. The product page describes it as milder than the 1 kg beans, with a rounder finish; the smaller pack suits a household that drinks decaf occasionally.
The FAP capsules, 100 to a box, are for machines built for the FAP system, on the same settings as the Classico capsule. The product page describes ripe fruit and cocoa.
Which one for you
An espresso machine with a grinder, or a bean-to-cup machine: the beans. An espresso machine without a grinder: the tin. A moka pot or a cafetière: we have no decaf made for either. The beans are an espresso bar blend — the bag says so — and the tin is an espresso grind. With a grinder you can take the beans coarser and it will work, but that is a workaround rather than what the blend was built for. A FAP machine: the capsules. We do not stock a Nespresso-compatible decaf; our Oro, Cremoso, Intenso and Napoli capsules fit Nespresso Original machines only, not Vertuo. Keeping it
Decaf keeps like any coffee: sealed, dry, cool and out of the sun, in a cupboard rather than the fridge. Buy the size you will get through. More in How to keep coffee fresh at home. For cafés and offices
For a café or an office, start with the Coffee Finder for Business; the FAP capsules are for FAP-system machines only. For a home machine, the Coffee Finder has a “decaf only” switch.
