Pistachio, hazelnut or chestnut cream? Three Agrimontana jars
Two nut creams made with milk and a chestnut cream made from chestnuts, sugar and vanilla: what is in each jar, how to use it, and the allergens.
Agrimontana make three sweet creams in jars: pistachio, hazelnut and chestnut. The two nut creams are rich spreads made with milk and sunflower oil. The chestnut cream is made from chestnuts, cane sugar and vanilla alone, and is closer to a preserve.
Pistachio cream
The pistachio cream is made with 25% Sicilian pistachios. Sugar comes first on the label, followed by the pistachio, sunflower oil, skimmed milk powder and cocoa butter, so it is a sweet spread rather than the plain pistachio paste a gelato maker would use.
Spread it on warm toast, use it to fill cakes and pastries, swirl it through ice cream or spoon it over a plain panna cotta.
Ingredients: sugar, Sicilian pistachio 25%, sunflower seed oil, skimmed-milk powder, cocoa butter, emulsifier: soy lecithin, salt. It may contain traces of other nuts (hazelnut, pecan, almond), peanuts and sesame. The label says it is made without palm oil.
Hazelnut cream
The hazelnut cream is made with 30% Nocciola Piemonte PGI hazelnuts, the round hazelnut of Piedmont, and 7% cocoa. It suits warm toast, a mousse, a swirl through gelato or the filling of a cake.
Ingredients: sugar, hazelnuts "Nocciola Piemonte PGI" 30%, sunflower seed oil, cocoa 7%, cocoa butter, skimmed-milk powder, whey milk powder, lactose, emulsifier: sunflower lecithin. It may contain soy and other nuts, and it is also made without palm oil.
Chestnut cream with vanilla
Chestnuts are where Agrimontana began: the house started out in 1972 candying them. The chestnut cream is made with 52 g of chestnut for every 100 g, cane sugar and natural vanilla extract, and nothing else. The label gives 0 g of fat per 100 g and calls it naturally gluten free.
Use it on toast at breakfast, in a tart or stirred through yoghurt. If you want the chestnuts whole, the candied chestnuts come four to a box, to eat with coffee after a meal or to crumble over ice cream.
The labels side by side
Per 100 g, the pistachio cream has 561 kcal and 35 g of fat, the hazelnut cream 526 kcal and 30 g of fat, and the chestnut cream 243 kcal and 0 g of fat.
Allergies and storage
The pistachio cream contains pistachio, milk and soy. The hazelnut cream contains hazelnuts and milk. Both carry "may contain" warnings for other nuts, set out in the ingredients above. Keep the jars in a cool, dry place and in the fridge once opened. The jams, honeys and creams are all on the jams and creams shelf.
