How the finder chooses

One use, then the machine, then the numbers

The finder works only with the Caffè Vergnano range we hold as an authorised UK distributor: 34 lines of beans, ground coffee and capsules. The first two answers decide which tag a line must carry; a requirement and the volume band can exclude more; the rest weigh the lines that pass.

What the coffee is for. Every line carries the uses it is made for: an espresso bar, a bean-to-cup machine, filter and breakfast service, FAP capsules, Nespresso®-compatible capsules, an office, a retail shelf. Only the lines tagged for your use stay in the running.

How it is made. Where the machine matters, the second answer sets the tag the finder looks for, and can replace the first: a traditional machine keeps the espresso-bar lines, a bean-to-cup the lines tagged for it (whole beans), filter or cafetière the filter lines (the ground tins and the lighter beans), FAP / Espresso Point and Nespresso®-compatible only the capsules made for that system. We do not stock capsules for other systems, and the finder says so rather than guess.

Cups a day. The volume sets the pack. The finder works with the band you pick (12, 38, 75, 200 or 400 cups a day stand for the five bands). Below 50 the 2.5 kg bags stay out, because the bag would not be finished at its best; from 50 they qualify and from 150 they earn two extra points. A box of 100 capsules earns points up to 25 cups and loses them above. The band also gives the quantities on each result: cups a day × 26 trading days × the typical dose, rounded up to whole packs, and a cost per cup at your price.

Milk, sector and stock. These weigh rather than filter. A mostly-milk menu favours the blends rated for milk; a mostly-black one favours the lighter blends. Cafés, restaurants, caterers and offices get a nudge towards a house blend, hotels towards a premium line; from 300 cups a day the high-volume lines score higher; a line in stock gets a point. Up to three lines are shown: the best fit, then a richer or lighter alternative; from 50 cups, when the range has an eligible 2.5 kg bag and three lines are showing, the bag takes the third place as the volume alternative.

Requirements. A decaf option adds one decaffeinated companion row beneath the results, sized at about a tenth of the volume, when the range has a decaf for that use and system (the Nespresso®-compatible boxes have none). All decaffeinated shows only decafs. Certified organic keeps only the organic line, which also rules out some routes. When a hospitality or office sector is chosen and results show, they end with the counter add-ons: hot chocolate and sugar sticks.

A retail shelf. Selling coffee on takes a different path: no cups or milk, but the formats your customers buy and how broad an opening range, from three or four lines to the full shelf. The order is a ranked starter shelf that begins with the everyday 250 g ground, the classic tin, a 100% Arabica tin, an approachable and a bolder 500 g bag, a decaf tin, and a mild and a strong capsule.

Decaffeinated lines appear alongside the regulars here; in the service routes the finder brings them as the companion row or, on request, on their own, while the retail shelf ranks its decaf tin as an ordinary line. Counter add-ons (hot chocolate, sugar sticks) are not scored and are not listed.

Typical doses

The doses behind the estimate

Conventional, sourced figures, not a promise of what any machine uses: the Italian espresso institute’s certified single for espresso, the Speciality Coffee Association’s brewing ratio for filter. The slider above lets you move the ground-coffee doses within their ranges; capsules are counted, not weighed.
